Ties and Wound Healing

We have to be mindful how natural wound healing occurs and each baby reacts differently to it. Below is what you can expect during the healing stages of your baby’s wound site.

1. CLOT FORMATION

  • After the procedure, a clot forms to stop the bleeding

2. INFLAMMATION

  • Initial onset: occurs within a few hours and last a couple of weeks

  • MAXIMUM REACTION PEAKS at day 1-3

    • Some babies may be more sensitive at this stage. Consider different options to help with any discomfort they may have.

  • Characteristics: swelling, heat, pain, redness, and or functional impairment

3. PROLIFERATION

  • Initial onset: within 24-48 hours, overlapping the inflammation stage

  • PEAKS 2-3 weeks post surgery

  • Characteristics: growth of granulation tissue, new blood vessels, and wound contraction

4. MATURATION/REMODELING

  • Initial onset: 1-3 weeks after the procedure and can continue longer than a year

  • Characteristics: new tissue slowly gains strength and flexibility

  • Formation of type 1 collagen
