Ties and Wound Healing
We have to be mindful how natural wound healing occurs and each baby reacts differently to it. Below is what you can expect during the healing stages of your baby’s wound site.
1. CLOT FORMATION
After the procedure, a clot forms to stop the bleeding
2. INFLAMMATION
Initial onset: occurs within a few hours and last a couple of weeks
MAXIMUM REACTION PEAKS at day 1-3
Some babies may be more sensitive at this stage. Consider different options to help with any discomfort they may have.
Characteristics: swelling, heat, pain, redness, and or functional impairment
3. PROLIFERATION
Initial onset: within 24-48 hours, overlapping the inflammation stage
PEAKS 2-3 weeks post surgery
Characteristics: growth of granulation tissue, new blood vessels, and wound contraction
4. MATURATION/REMODELING
Initial onset: 1-3 weeks after the procedure and can continue longer than a year
Characteristics: new tissue slowly gains strength and flexibility
